Bunkhouse (at the Anvil Hotel)

Don't expect much staying at this place, it's not at all comfortable or welcoming. From the moment you check in they tell you ALL their rules, no smoking, drinking or disturbances; so much for Western hospitality! As far as previous comments about the bunk beds being rickety I can personally attest that's completely true, it looks like the owner decided to save some money and make them himself. Not only that, but there's no carpeting on floor, which only adds to the cold and sterile atmosphere. Another problem, there are a lot of people coming and going at all hours of the night. I especially felt uncomfortable having the back door open at night. It looked like anyone could slip in and out without detection. Oh, did I mention, this hostel is just one big room, no separation between the sexes? I felt like I was in an Army barracks instead of a hostel. Plus, the common room, which is adjacent to the dorm room, is usually filled with people watching television until late at night. Another negative was they have their lights on a timer. They shut off automatically at night and turn on early in the morning. They just don't want you to get a good night's sleep at this place. What really bugged me most about this place was I had not one, but two pairs of sunglasses disappear on me. As was expected, no one saw them. Yeah, right! I only stayed two nights at this place, which was really two nights too long. If I had to do it all over again I would've slept in my car. It would've been cheaper and I would've felt more safe and secure. In the future, I'd skip this place and go directly to the hostel in W. Yellowstone.

Having stayed in many hostels in North America, I found this was one of the nicest and friendliest. Plus...HOT TUB.

If you're just looking for a place to crash for the night, this is the cheapest place in town. With rickety bunk beds, rude warning signs about no drinking allowed, and wrecked furniture in the common room with a TV with no reception, they don't pretend it's an enjoyable place to stay and you shouldn't expect it to be one. The only redeeming features are that each bed comes with a locker for your stuff and that the shower and bathroom are kept pretty clean.

Poorly made and badly painted bunk beds. The dorm was large, with 27 beds (mostly bunks), and males and females on different sides. They had clean showers and restrooms, and a large open tv room with cable and a nice large tv mounted to the wall. There were one washer and one dryer. They had a kitchen with refrigerator, microwave and one electric burner on the counter. The cost of $25.00 (tax included) is a great deal in that expensive town. I thought it was ok. The good thing is its location. It is on the main street and walking distance from downtown with all the art galleries and museums, etc.

The place has the ambiance of a county jail -- poorly-made bunk beds painted a dreary color, a moldy smell, a very awful, messy kitchen, and totally wrecked furniture in the TV room. There were rude, hand-written signs all over. Sure, it's a bargain in this super pricey place, but if they had tried even just a little to make it less dirty and dreary we might have actually had fun. It sold out on a Saturday night in July.

The place is huge! It takes up the basement below the Anvil Hotel. The downside is that it seems like a military dorm with all the people sometimes; not very cozy, and relatively expensive. Also, if you have a Wyoming driver's license they won't let you stay (as of '02) The upside is that it's the damn cheapest place to stay in Jackson in the winter by far! And the skiing speaks for itself. It's almost deserted in the summer, but camping in the area is better then.
