Great people! I staid there last year for a couple of days and it was, by far, the best 3 or 4 days of my whole trip. If you went to know what Hawaii is really about and if you went to really feel the vibe and the culture, this is where you have to go. Tina and Thunder are so generous it is unbelievable. It's not the cleanest place nor the most luxurious, but it's probably the warmest you'll find. I'll go back for sure!!! Thanks to Tina and Thunder! — Caroline Martin , Canada (2010-07-22)

Great escape, friendly, and hospitable If you're a seasoned traveler looking to get away from the typical hostel environment (crowded, unfriendly, impersonal, confined) then this is the place for you! Great laid-back place with a lot of perks. Thunder is the man, very nice, friendly, and helpful. Of course Tina is great as well though sadly she was really busy when I was there. Cost is very reasonable especially when freebies are taken into account. After getting pummeled at a surf beach that Thunder says were only three- or four-foot waves (yeah, right, maybe if you measure from the backside) he was nice enough to set me up with a local massage therapist! Great recommendations via Thunder, fabulous beaches, nice people, cheapest groceries/beer on island (or, if I remember correctly, the second cheapest store of all the islands) good people, shower outside if you want under the stars. Beyond losing my shorts and nearly killing myself while bodyboarding, which is an experience I will surely not forget for the rest of my life, this place is truly a gem. If Thunder does the things he plans on for this hostel it could be magical. The only downside for me was leaving. I will be back. — chris (lost shorts guy) , US (2009-06-23)

Surf is up! If you are a down to earth type person and looking to meet the real oahu culture, this is the right place! Tina and thunder were great, me and my friends had such a good time surfing around the whole island and eating typical food, hanging out with the locals (uncle Wal), which they show us the cool spots. Thunder is a great person, spiritual and a with lot of common sense, Tina is sweet and humble. We didn't even need to rent a car, Thunder hook us up with one of his car and we went to different beaches, bars and liquor stores. We party every night at the hostal, sharing and meeting new people from all over the world, it felt like home. I'm looking forward to go Makaha World Famous Surfing Retreat again with my brother and more friends! aloha and hang loose! — Renzo , Usa (2009-05-21)
Not what we expected and what they offer It was dirty, far away from everything, very bad public transport (to go to Honolulu an hour and a half, by bus), no stores where you can buy food, no privacy. Animals in the house. They say they offer luxury rooms, I think it is the opposite. But the people was nice, at least! — Gema , Usa (2009-03-14)

Great place! Super, friendly hosts! clean, hospitable, friendly, and full of the aloha spirit! perfect place for the laid-back crowd who wants to get away from the crowded touristy, over-run beaches of the Waikiki area. On the drier West side of the island. Thunder and Tina were awesome hosts, and I will stay there when I return to the island. equipment to borrow, tour advice, rides to scenic beaches, and a great beach a few blocks away! Not a five-star hotel, but comfy and close to the beach, and like I said, great hosts! — Lisa Hurley , USA (2009-02-08)

Great, offbeat place to stay in Oahu This is a fun, friendly place to stay away from Waikiki and Honolulu. The owners are very hospitable and friendly and were able to help with everything I needed. Clean rooms, free Wi-Fi, snorkeling equipment available to borrow, and just a short walk to some of Oahu's best beaches! There's no sign on the hostel, so just look for the surfboard above the gate. — Aaron , USA (2008-12-18)

This Hostel Was awesome. The Owners were so friendly and helpful in showing or telling us where we would find the most awesome sights. They sent us to the point and we saw dolphins our first day. The rooms are clean and you can just hang out or go all day. I highly recommend this place. We will gladly come back to this hostel on our next visit. — Denise Hopkins , USA (2008-12-05)
