The Hostelz.com Review
Jugendherberge Füssen Youth Hostel is what you can call a family hostel! Upon entering you will certainly find lots of children and a ping pong table with plenty of amusing teenagers. Bavarian HI hostels aim at hosting families and school groups, and here they will certainly keep you company most of the time since it is not a very big hostel. Be prepared for eventual unexpected noise -- the hostel's 11 p.m. curfew is not always obeyed.

The Fuessen hostel is the only hostel close to the famous Bavarian Alps castles, built by equally famous King Ludwig. The castles are easily reached by buses, which leave out of the main railroad station.

The main problem with this hostel is that you must always walk to it from the main train station and this is a long, fifteen-minute walk (about a mile), which can be a long way through when you are carrying luggage or if the weather is not very cooperative. This is also the same distance you will have to walk every time you go out for the bus or to dine out or run errands downtown. If you have a car, this is not a problem because there is a nice parking lot.

You also cannot cook in this hostel and no dinner is available, so be prepared to bring your own junk food to enjoy in the room with refreshments from a machine in the hostel basement or to walk a long distance to the downtown restaurants. Breakfast is help-yourself and well served with plenty of food.

The beds and mattresses are new and very good quality. The closets also are new. The showers are not so good -- they are hard to handle and turn off automatically when you shower, so you have to start them back.

The hostel does not offer any social activities or sightseeing programs, which it should, as this is a very famous region. However, the reception guys are all very nice and very willing to furnish all information in very good English or in German. When needed, there is a large luggage room available for free.

2  What were they thinking The staff was friendly, however, we had the misfortune of a football team staying there when we did. They monopolized the women's facilities and because there are no locks on the doors, we had young boys coming in our room after they went out drinking. The team returned at 2 a.m. and finally stopped the screaming and banging on doors at about 3:10 a.m. The boys were also drinking in the chapel in the hostel. The hostel otherwise was clean and we would have stayed their longer if the team had not been there. We found another hostel, which was amazing for a little more that was not much more in price. The staff was pleasant and the breakfast ok. I liked that it was in town and relatively close to many of the things we wanted to see. My only advice is that if there is a sports team there of teenagers, find another hostel immediately because no one knew how to contact the hostel administrators and even though we advised the hostel the next morning I don't think they kicked the team out.  , Canadian ()
4  Good hostel. The hostel is well marked from the train station. It is only a short 5-10 minute walk from the station. There are plenty of good hiking/biking trails. Also buses to the castles can be found nearby. Showers are closed from 22:00 [10 p.m.] to 6:30 for noise reasons. Staff are friendly and helpful.  ()
3  Typical HI Hostel. It's clean, with an okay staff. There's no kitchen, and the separate dorms are the primary drawback. But it's a good place to sleep if you are checking out the castles nearby.  ()
4  Great location if you want to go to Neuschawnstein. A load of school kids were here when I stayed. The staff put them at the opposite end of the hostel. Thanks.  ()
