Horrid place
The one good thing about this place is that it lets you see what your life would have been if every decision you had made was the wrong one. It is basically nothing more than a glorified homeless shelter. I wouldn't recommend it to a dog.

Extremely Poor - the worst hostel ever?
This Hostel stank really bad and was really really bad. The people who own the place dont know what is going on, but that lands you in trouble when trying to pay for things. There are also some absolute wasteoids clogging up the place for months, which probably contributes to the absolute stench.

Not for everyone
I stayed in The Globe Hostel when I was in San Francisco, after having lived in the city and returned on vacation. The majority of the people you meet at The Globe are from outside the U.S. and that's interesting but it is, even among hostels, an acquired taste. The staff were pleasant when I was there but the place is not very clean. If you're really into a very gritty SF experience, The Globe is the place for you. A good percentage of the people there are long-term residents and not just passing tourists. I've stopped by on occasion, on other visits to SF, and some of those same people I met during my stay (summer '98) are still there! When I was there, I stayed quite some time and made a number of friends, some of whom I still keep in touch with. Again, it is an acquired taste but a night in this hostel is worth the experience. More than a night might be too much for most.

Worst Hostel Ever
This hostel is really unpleasant. Do not stay here unless in the direst emergency. I made a note during my trip, specifically, to warn others about this place. When we arrived the staff had made a screw up, and told us in broken English that we would have to pay for our rooms (the ones we'd already paid for). It took two hours of arguing to get them to accept that we had in fact paid -- and we had printed reservations with us. The rooms are very insecure with no facility to lock up your gear. Worse, they feel threatening, and are so ugly and prisonlike that your fellow residents seem like odd cons. Many of them are permanent workers rather than visitors. There's absolutely no parking and the street outside is very ropey, so don't plan on bringing a car. The area is quite dangerous and we were attacked by a homeless man two streets away. Internet is a joke -- literally two very old slow machines, always occupied. Cyber cafe across the street is very expensive. No laundry facilities whatsoever. Saddest of all -- I learnt some very upsetting things about how they treat the staff -- don't want to go into it as I don't want to get the individuals involved in trouble, but basically, the management are unconscionable.

This place sucks. The handicapped lady said it all. They tried to bully me around but I just laughed at them. My family is originally from Russia, so when I spoke Russian to the one guy, it must have freaked him out. Next time he saw me he ran away. I spent one night here which was one too many. I know the owner, who was out of town. My private room was free. That's exactly what it was worth. Shame on you Marty, for letting your hostel become a flophouse.

I didn't have heating in room in Jan and was treated very rudely -- first asked to move my room days later for others' reservation. Then later when I was leaving, harassed by a young teen worker bully boy from Russia (I commented that it was wrong for Russians to poison the man in London and it's well known there is much corruption with the change of government systems years ago) being rude and sexist and though I've an injury and crutch, he wanted to make a show and pushed my bags out and locked door on me though I had wanted to come back for my second bag. I think there is racism against americans and women. and also there was an army guy there that was just as bad and not helpful or considerate and saw this. now he is threatening to keep or return my mail, I will call police and sue in that case, I do not recommend staying here at all as there is such abuse and no supervision for teen bully boy staff.

This place is weird. The staff is far from friendly, they even accused me of not paying the rent when I absolutely had. The corridors smells, I had to ask for sheets. The list is long. Don't stay here.

This place is awesome, I have visited several times and the staff have always been friendly and funny, The roommates are always great too. Great pool table downstairs and a wonderful bar next door if drinking is your thing. Fun parties, funny people, and good times. Highly recommended.

this place is terrible! there is no mention of the bar right below the rooms that plays music right up til 3 a.m. every morning or the motor bikes that hang around outside. They say they have all these facilities but when you ask where they are no longer at the hostel, the staff do not speak good english and and unhelpful! i would not recomend staying here!

This hostel is a very weird place. Most of the people who stay there are living there, and they are not international guys, they are old people who live there. The place is kind of dirty and it always smells funny, also there's a lot of pot smoking in all the common areas, almost every guy who works there, lives there and smokes a lot of pot. The breakfast sucks a lot. The rooms aren't very good either, the bedsheets are disgusting. Although you can find nice people, I wouldn't recommend staying here, because you can find a better place with the same money you pay there.

It was an absoloute dump. We stayed for an hour then left -- it was that bad, the sheets had hair on them and the smell was so bad I felt like throwing up. It's also located in the middle of nowhere -- not even the trolleys (trams) travel there, you can't make a booking online or even over the phone --- not that you'd want to.

Great people, great staff, great location, great atmosphere, fun, parties, in one word -- awesome -- we've lived there for three months and it was the best time of our lives. Thank you thank you thank you again, and we are saying all this after eight months, since we left San Francisco. Hope to return this year.

well well well, i just wanted to say a few things about the globe. coming from a guy who traveled in more then twenty countries, i can really say, it was like home away from home, one of the few best. Great staff, close to everything people from all over, great price and funny staff. its a place i sent all of my friends to when they came to frisco, they were all so happy, that i would recommend it in the future. all i can really say is in san francisco its the only place for me, and im sure you'll see me there again, riding my bike back drunk.

Great location, close to Union Square shopping and Mission/South Mission bars. Friendly staff. Bring your own sleeping bag because the blankets provided are disgusting. I wouldn't use this hostel for an extended stay, but it is great as a crash place for a night of partying/shopping/eating in the city. Would come back again.

Nice staff, open minded vibe. I haven't been to any other hostels so I didn't know what to expect or how to compare, but I'd definitely come back here again! My only problem was that the internet computer is a Mac and I'm partial to PCs (duh).
