The Hostelz.com Review
Jazz on the Town - East Village is in a great location near two subway stops and lots of shops, eateries, and bars that won't break the bank! Like most old NYC buildings, it is cramped for space and has no elevator, but they have attempted to inject some bohemian charm with brightly painted walls (each floor is a different color) and the occasional painting.

Located on Fourteenth Street just off Second Avenue (look for the red awning), the hostel is one block east of the L line's Third Avenue stop and three blocks east of the Union Square/Fourteenth Street subway station served by L, N, Q, R, 4, 5, and 6 trains. An uptown 4, 5, or 6 train can take you to Grand Central Station or such areas as "museum mile" where you can visit The Whitney, The Guggenheim, or The Met. Head downtown to visit the neighborhoods of SoHo and Chinatown. Likewise, the N, Q, and R uptown trains visit Penn Station and Times Square or take a downtown train all the way to Brooklyn if you like.

Jazz on the Town offers dorm-style accommodations with en-suite bathrooms (toilet, sink, and stand up shower). Expect bare bones facilities and you will not be surprised during your stay. The rooms are just large enough to fit the bunk beds, which have no ladders. The mattresses are covered in plastic and the provided bedding consists of thin, threadbare sheets, a blanket, and lifeless pillow. Heat arrives via a radiator and air conditioning is supplied by a window unit. There are small lockers in the room which can fit a coat, purse, or pair of shoes (but not all three at the same time). Do not expect to lock up a backpack, as even the smallest ones won't fit! The bathrooms are generally clean, but may have quirks such as the shower faucet falling off or the toilet seat and lid not being attached. There are no hooks, shelves, or other furniture in the rooms or bathroom so invariably your possessions will end up stacked on the floor.

Two of the floors have a tiny room at the end of the landing containing two internet computers, pay phones, coffee maker, toaster oven, and microwave. There are no refrigerators, however, so the possibility of bringing back leftovers is limited. The only common area is the rooftop which has a few scattered tables and chairs. On a nice day it serves its purpose, but the area does not appear well maintained.

Jazz on the Town advertises twenty-four-hour check-in, which is not the case. The desk attendant cited check-in as 2 p.m. and check-out as 11 a.m. Their version of "luggage storage" consists of tossing bags in a pile on the floor of an unlocked storage closet or lining the hallway from the front door to the front desk. They also have a problem with double booking beds and shifting their longer visiting guests from room to room.

If you are looking for a hostel in which to relax and visit at length with other guests, then Jazz on Town is not for you. But if you simply need a cheap, safe place to lay your head after long days of sightseeing and partaking of the NYC nightlife, then this is the place for you.

reading the most recent comments i felt i would put on the site about our stay back in nov 2006 and it looks like things havent improved. When we stayed there was no hot water for showers, the beds were very uncomfortable,it was extremely noisy, the phone didnt work and the lights in the rooms were dingy.I like cheap but there are limits.we stayed 3 nights and that was enough. There are better hostels in nyc than this

Not clean at all
I think this is one of the worst hostels i have seen, me and my friends got there early morning and were unable to check in so we left our bags (in a room near the front desk with no security so our stuff could easily have been stolen). The hallway was very dirty and looked like it had not been cleaned for ages. it was disgusting -- we talked to a girl who was staying there who said the rooms were even worse, therefore we left without checking in. I would not recommend this hostel from what i saw.

I had great time here back in June of '05. The rooms were small, but who gives a poop? It's a hostel. I spent most of my time hanging out on the roof and meeting all kinds of people from all over and going with them on pub crawls and -- yeah, I had a great experience.

April 2007
Visited April 2007, stayed in a six-bunk mixed dorm, and it isn't phenomenal, but it'll do if you just want to sleep. Lucked out with good roommates (two girls from England, one guy from Sweden) and one bunk was empty. Check-in isn't twenty-four hours, beds get double booked, some staff couldn't care less, luggage storage is awful, half of the shower door was missing, rooms and hallways are so tiny only one person can walk through at a time. But location is awesome, the neighborhood is "real" (shops, restaurants), some of the staff is great, it is relatively clean. Note to out of town visitors, please don't judge NYC based on these accommodations! There are some really great places to stay, but they will cost you a considerable amount of money. On a security note, if you bring expensive stuff (cameras, laptops) or go on a shopping spree, you need to bring some sort of lockable luggage and maybe you can lock it to the bunks (like with a bike lock/chain). I, personally, didn't have a problem, but I'm tired of hearing people whine about missing items at hostels. You are sleeping in a room with strangers. Assuming that the staff and guests are not liars and thieves just because they are often young international travelers is completely naive. If you want a nice place to relax, meet people, and converse, then go elsewhere. If you just need an inexpensive place to crash, then this is it.

November 2006
Safety: safe hostel located in the East Village, away from heavy traffic. I stayed there mid-november for one night as a single woman. Subway stations are only two blocks away and this makes transportation very easy. Good location in an area relatively cheap in NYC (e.g., a meal in a Ukrainian restaurant only cost me $8-9 one night). The room of six behind the office desk was perfectly fine to my standards. The bathroom in the room had toilets, a sink, and a shower. The only con was the noise when people tried to sleep and someone used the shower. Otherwise, a locker token was given for free to lock personal belongings. Bedsheets were clean, same for towels. However, it costs $4 to store luggage if one wants to tour the city and come later before leaving the city -- pricey given the bed cost. The hostel has no common area besides a patio on top of the building, and a computer/phone areas. Overall, I would certainly stay again if I need to go to NYC again. the staff was very polite, and helpful with directions.

CHEATS.. that describes the place in one word. The place is cheap and relatively clean, but very VERY CAREFUL using your credit card. They charge you for extra nights.. I got to know only when I checked my card statement. And when I called them about it, they asked for all kinds of paperwork - my account statement, credit card slips, etc, and said would look at the matter only when they get all this. STAY AWAY FROM THE PLACE UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOSE MONEY WHILE TRYING TO SAVE MONEY.. There are equally cheap places in town.

I stayed here during part of the summer of 2005 while I was apartment hunting in New York City. First off, as a New York local I will tell you, there are nicer hostels. The rooms are EXTREMELY cramped. My room had six people in a space that should have held three. Staff were constantly coming in and out of the room and extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. Its perk is its convenient location near Union Square. However, this doesn't make up for its considerable noise, filth, and crampedness.

The only good thing about this hostel was that I meet a very cool girl from New Zealand while I was there and we have become friends and still keep in touch. We both had a nightmare time while staying there. I left Jazz on the Town a day before she did back in March. And because of the staff parties all night long without any regard for the guests, she was up all night and completely frazzled for her trip back to New Zealand, which as anyone knows takes an entire day from the U.S. The place was sterile. There was no furniture and that which was there in our room was placed there by one of the staff that "works"/"cleans" there in order to have a bed each night and didn't want any of the other guests to use it!! It was unclean (you can SMELL when a place has simple been wiped down with someone's dirty towel) but the bathrooms LOOK really nice; it's a severe walk-up and overpriced for sure. And no use lodging a complaint to the staff/management, because they don't give a rat's ass. Nope, nope, nope, stay away. And stay away from the sister location, Jazz on the Park, as well. These places where the staff "work" in exchange for a room are the worst, because the management is hiring all of their friends so there's no accountability at all.

I spent four nights here in April 2005, and was plenty happy with the simple, clean rooms and the bathroom/showers. The location was excellent, and I as a single female felt totally safe in the mixed dorm rooms and in the area.

I stayed at Jazz on the Town from March 8th till the 13th, 2005, and it was ace!!! This was the first time I've ever stayed in a hostel and I couldn't have been any happier with it!!! The rooms are small but have everything you should expect from a hostel! All rooms feature your own shower and toilet!!! The staff are very cool and don't mind parties, also, rooms are cleaned on most days!! Very safe. I left my iPod and my money clearly on show for most of my stay and they were never so much as looked at!!! A great stay and a great place. I'm so gutted to be home. I loved it!!! You will too!!!

Not good. I stayed in a 4 bed dorm: There were 2 bunks, a sink, and a mirror; that was all the furniture. It was fairly pricy, too. Reception staff were not friendly, AND we had a MOUSE running in and out under our door--nightmare. Great views from the roof, though, and reception is classy, but ya can't sleep there folks!

I spent three nights in this hostel in January. The only good thing I can think of is the location, which was great. On the other hand, the rooms were just filthy, with so much dust and I-don't-know-what in the floor. The window glass was not well sealed and the freezing cold winter air would make the room so cold!!! In addition, the heat would just work for one hour (prior to "sleeping time") and for the rest of the night you were left on your own or, to be more specific, with your coats, jackets, or whatever you could use to warm yourself! And this while it was 4 degrees outside … NOT KIDDING! A pretty awful experience!!!

I stayed last September 03' at the Jazz on the Park and the room was extremely cramped, no room for storage (smaller than a gym locker) and it wasn't anything like the pic. People come in and out of your room so keep your belongings. But it is cheap and if you go with high expectations for a hostel (any hostel) you will be surprised. The staff were great, but breakfast gone by the time you got there. But all in all, if I'm in town for 1-2 days max I'll stay there again!!! It's cheaper than anything else.
