If you require a cheap, clean, and safe place to stay for the night, then the DuBeau Hostel is a worthwhile choice. It doesn't have the super friendly atmosphere that some other hostels achieve, so if you are looking for ambient surroundings, or are planning a longer stay in Flagstaff, then you might want to look elsewhere – check out their larger sister hostel up the road.
DuBeau is conveniently located minutes from the Amtrak train station, and the heart of old-town Flagstaff is just a few streets away. Bring your earplugs – the trains are relentless! If you are on a really tight budget, you can discount your room rate in return for a few hours work. The hostel runs tours to both Sedona and the Grand Canyon, which are excellent value for money. Call ahead to check the scheduled tour is operating.
Breakfast is free, and the rooms are in a good condition, although some of the locks need to be replaced. There is a central kitchen and lounge/games room. Private rooms are available. Contrary to claims on their website, not all dorms have bathrooms – apparently these smaller dorms house the overflow during busy periods. Fair enough, but a mirror in the room would have been appreciated.
All things considered, if your priorities in a hostel are convenience, cleanliness and safety then DuBeau is more than adequate. Enjoy your stay!

Way back when! Stayed here with my Mum (Gina) after losing Dad way back in 1993? thought I'd surprise Heather a close friend who worked at DuBeau at the time. The surprise visit fell flat on it's face as she was in Chicago visiting family! Well, the whole stay was like being with a new adopted family and the day trips more than I thought they'd be for such a cheap fee. I have done significant travelling around Europe and the people, place and energy is amazing here. I absolutely loved my stay at the DuBeau so much i didn't want to leave. the GC hostel (there sister hostel) is also amazing!! and the staff is great! — Erica , American (2008-09-04) I have stayed a many hostels around America and this is one of the best I have been to due to the fact that it was cheaper, gave you free breakfast, a pool table, foozball, and was very close to the train station. They also will pick you up and drop you off at the Greyhound station if you need. They offered very cheap and in depth tours of Sedona and the Grand Canyon, which were excellent. The rooms were clean and were not very packed out when I was there. There is parking if you have a car. Flagstaff is a fun little town and the Hostel in in the Hub of it all. There is a bathroom in every room and each dorm room houses eight people. It was close to the train line so you will hear the train! — Bel (2007-03-25) Well, staying here depends on your personality. If you're the introverted type that likes peace and quiet, you may not like it here.
But if you're a party animal, this hostel is tailor-made for party animals. Yes, it can get wild, but you can also learn so much from interacting with all the other cultures there.
The hostel itself is quite nice. No bugs and very clean. — Pat (2006-06-29) Great location near downtown Flagstaff. The train going past can get noisy, but the dorms have en suite bathrooms and even their own little fridges. Staff are fantastic and go out of their way to be accommodating. The tours organized and run by the hostel are good value for money and Michael, one of the tour guides, is knowledgeable about flora and fauna and the geology. I had a wonderful time, thanks, guys! — Lauren (2005-08-10) Very nice hostel, with friendly and helpful staff. Great location in downtown Flagstaff. However be sure to bring your earplugs, as the hostel is about a block from a busy railroad line. — M (2005-07-27) I loved both The Grand Canyon Hostel and The DuBeau because the staff were great, the guests were fun, and most of all both hostels are a block from one another and a two-minute walk to Flagstaff's historic downtown district. This is a funky, wild town. I only came here to go to the Grand Canyon and Sedona, assuming the city of Flagstaff would be a bore like Rochester, New York. But it's not! It's a happening college town, and if you hang out there long enough you'll see some wild things. Such as Middle-Eastern belly dancing in the street, for example.
The town center has funky boutiques and great eateries. Such as Main Street Catering on San Francisco St., on the opposite side of the railroad tracks from the hostel. Or you can walk around the corner to Beaver Street. There you'll find the Beaver Street Brewery and Macy's Coffee House, which serves dinner until 7 p.m. Macy's also has a photo gallery of pictures created by the owner who evidently is a follower of the Baha'i faith, so you may even see a Baha'i reading going on there. So don't get converted! Just kidding. The Downtown Diner is cool and I hear Alpine Pizza is really good. That Last Days Cafe is a quick walk and there was a drag queen running a poetry reading there late one night. Goth girls and regular college guys who play pool frequent the Monte Vista Lounge, inside the Monte Vista Hotel.
Also, if you like awesome thrift shops walk past the campus of Northern Arizona University. Around the corner from The Galaxy Diner is this awesome store called The Buffalo Exchange. There's also a huge Goodwill Thrift shop. Many of the hostel folks went to the thrift stores for coats and sweaters. Unlike the rest of Arizona where it's hot desert, Flagstaff is cooler due to high altitude, so in October it was getting colder.
The only bad thing about the hostels is that they're near the trains that run all night. So I was glad to get a quiet night's rest when I got to Sedona, but I missed Flagstaff and came back to the DuBeau a few days later. When I first was at the DuBeau my room was in the middle area. But the next time they stuck me at the end room where you really hear the trains. So you know what I did? I walked over to the Grand Canyon Hostel because they have a TV room in the back and it was warm and quiet. I slept there on the couch and no one bothered me. If the trains really get to you, there are tons of cheap motels nearby.
But I did enjoy myself very much at both hostels. They give tours to the Grand Canyon and Sedona, which was a blast. And from there people went to Monument Valley. I took a Greyhound Bus one day to see Montezuma's Castle in Camp Verde, AZ. It could have been a letdown, because since the 1930's they don't let people inside the castle anymore. But what happened is the Greyhound only goes to the outskirts of Camp Verde, so I had the only taxi driver's phone number ready and he picked me up and drove me to the castle. And after I was done, he said, "There's a rodeo going on today. They only have it once a year." And it was a rodeo carnival for Camp Fort Verde Days, which was brimming with real cowboys, so that trip ended up being worth it. That was the weekend of October 9, 2004 but the taxi guy said that Camp Verde always has a Crawfish Fest or something going on. So my recommendation is to make the trip out to Montezuma's Castle only if there's also something going on in the town center of Camp Verde itself.
In Flagstaff there's a visitor's center in the train station where you can buy cameras and stuff. And if you need a supermarket, Bashas is the place to go. It's a 22-minute walk up the hill. Around the supermarket are the neighborhoods. Check out the house on Elm Street, which is off of Leroux, because the owners have this wild sculpture on their lawn. — Anonymous (2004-11-02) This is an amazing hostel!! It has the best rooms, staff, game room, location, guests, and scenery. I could never ask for more. — Kris (2004-09-26) This is a fantastic place, centrally located for visiting the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Sunset Crater, and Meteor Crater. It has a fantastic, friendly staff, great people, and great rooms, built motel-style with their own bathrooms. The only bad things are the annoying trains that run every 15 minutes all day and night. They really interrupt your conversation if you are sitting outside. And the party room closes at 10 p.m. That's weird. But apart from that, thumbs up!!!
