The Hostelz.com Review
The Globetrotter Inn Edinburgh is a great starting, finishing, or layover point during your travels. Though it is very large, it doesn't make you feel at all overwhelmed. There's plenty to do here and it's not dodgy like some other backpackers.

From Waverley Train Station to the Shuttle Bus Pickup site, follow Princes Street/Waterloo Place east past the Balmoral Hotel towards Carlton Hill to Bus Stop C (on right). Shuttle bus arrives on the hour (be a few minutes early, just in case). Your first trip to the Inn is charged to your bill -- you can buy successive trips at the Inn shop (put them on your swipe-card).

The swipe-card, which is provided upon check-in, is your means for purchasing everything -- food, shuttle trips, drinks at the bar, and internet time. You first put money on it at the coin machine by the reception desk, and then proceed to the shop to buy what you want. The cashier charges and swipes, deducting the total from your balance. You can get a refund for your unused money upon check-out if your balance is more than 2 pounds.

This hostel is closer in feel to a resort hotel than a run-of-the-mill backpackers. The complex is set in an old manor with expansive property and full of trees and broad, green lawns. The hostel overlooks the Firth of Forth. The patios and bar face the overlook.

The hostel has a mostly party atmosphere but it's not too mad and out of control. There is some quietness and tranquility to it, owing to the setting. You can actually get some rest. There are privacy curtains, reading lamps, and lockers for a more secure, private stay. Most roommates are respectful and keep the noise down.

Everything including toilets and showers is clean and well-maintained, which is impressive considering the size and constant activity and turnover or guests. There are so many facilities, too -- the hostel boasts a bar, internet connectivity, a DVD cinema, reading lounge, cafeteria, large kitchen, food/general items shop, outdoor patio/picnic area, and gym. We recommend taking a shower in early-mid mornings (as hot water runs out).

The staff is efficient, dependable, and friendly. Staying at this hostel is a great opportunity to link up with fellow travelers before, during, and after your journey. We highly recommend it.

Good, but not the best
This was my first hostel experience, and I'm glad it was a good one! Though it is pretty far out of town (a definite negative), the six person dorm was clean and comfortable. The bed was awesome, with its own curtain, light, and shelf, and the lockers were big. The hostel is right on the Firth of Forth, which is gorgeous and very nice for a walk in the morning or evening. The bar was ok but we didn't think it was too social an atmosphere (we preferred the TV room or movie lounge for that). The showers and bathroom area were not the cleanest I've ever seen, but it was a pretty convenient set-up. I would stay here again, but I would first look into hostels within the actual city.

Interesting!
I stayed here in May '08, and although it was very clean and safe and secure, there were some interesting sights! One guy was so drunk (or something else) at breakfast that he fell asleep in his cornflakes, but he looked positively sane compared to the guy who was walking round in a pink mini-dress! and I only saw one guy peeing up the corner in the corridor, and one chap asleep in the bar on Sunday morning! The staff sorted out the guy who was peeing. The staff are very friendly, rooms are average size (very clean), and breakfast was average. It is set on the shores of the Firth of Forth, absolutely stunning. location, but don't go down to the shores after dark unless you are up for some unsavoury activity(!), it's a well known area for it. Shuttle bus to the city centre runs every half hour, and costs 1.50 single or 2.50 return. It's very prompt and takes about fifteen minutes. I dont think i'd stay here again -- there are nicer hostels in the city center.

One of the best
I was so comfortable, I didn't want to leave. Other hostels should take note. Great bunks, reading lights, curtain. Great showers, movie room. I'm a solo traveler, traveling europe for months and this is truly one of the best.

I probably wouldn't stay here again, but there were many good aspects
The hostel was clean throughout. The kitchen was spacious. It doesn't matter that you're out of town, since the shuttle bus is frequent and cheap. I did have an incident of a roommate bringing a drunken guy to my room at 3 a.m. Talking to a long term guest, I discovered that such incidents happen almost nightly. I probably wouldn't stay here again as I am not looking for that type of atmosphere. However, I still rate this hostel four stars because reception dealt with my concerns and immediately came to remove the drunken couple. The staff are great in terms of customer service.

Amazing!
This was a great hostel, but bad in terms of setting the standard for other hostels about Europe! This hostel had everything going for it -- location, party atmosphere, rooms, bathrooms. I was traveling by myself and found friends at the globetrotter. Edinburgh and the Globetrotter rock my world!

This was a dream. A bunch of us, friends from university in London, came here for a break in the summer of 2004 -- and what a break! The great thing about the inn is its location -- twenty minutes from Edinburgh city and with the shuttle facility it was the perfect place to chill out! The people were very lovely and the facilities were more than adequate. Football fever was raging and a couple of exciting evenings were well spent in the bar! The cool thing is we could cook a meal too! It was a treasured moment -- one I would love to experience again with family and friends. If ever in Scotland again, it will have to be the Globetrotters inn for me! Thank you for one of the most idyllic vacations!

I loved staying at this hostel. I guess prices have gone down since others have been there, because I only paid 10 pounds a night, and I think that was an incredibly reasonable rate! Loved the place... gorgeous property, and lots to do.

Globetrotters was a great experience for my cousin and I, being first timers to hostel life. The view from the hostel is breathtaking with lush lawns and the waters in back. Security was also great and the shuttle service was dependable. Would definitely recommend it!

I was there last weekend. The staff can't do enough — they are so friendly and available 24/7! Nice bunks, too — really spacious and homely! PS. Check out the guy at reception — he's "cute"!!

What a fantastic place!!! I just got back. I stayed there on New Year's Eve and had a GREAT time! It has a beautiful location, great transportation, loads of things to do, and amazingly friendly people. What more could you ask for? YOU HAVE to stay at Globetrotters — you'll have a great time. I'll definitely be coming back!

Highly recommended. It was my first hostel, and I was very pleased. I paid about 12 pounds per night. The beds are comfortable and warm, the private curtains were great, and there is a light and shelf in each bed. The staff are excellent, the amenities great, and the whole place is very clean. The only bad thing is its distance from the city center, but the shuttle is very dependable. There is a trail behind the hostel along the Firth of Forth. Lockers are in the room and I always felt safe.

Fantastic. The people are so friendly, and there's something happening all the time! Globetrotter has great beds with reading lights and privacy curtains. They've also got a bar, shop, internet cafe, DVD cinema, a beaufiful location, plus so much more... I'll be going back next year!

This place seems to have a lot, but you have to pay for it all. The internet stations are almost always broken--frustrating. The showers and bathroom are quite dirty. However, the kitchen is nice and big. It is quite far from the city by bus or car, so plan on travel time.

Kickin bar, cool staff, cheap drinks, and a comfy bed!!! What more can a backpacker want? It's a nice one Globetrotters.

This was my first hostel experience and I loved it!!! The Globetrotter was amazing, It had tons of amenities, and the staff were very friendly and fun to party with. The hostel is right outside of the city, with a gorgeous view. We had a private room en suite for 19 pounds a night apiece, which is very reasonable compared to how much Edinburgh costs. While it was a little outside the city, the shuttle was convenient and free.
