The Hostelz.com Review
East Timor Backpackers is quite a good deal. Owned by an eccentric Aussie electrician, and ultimately looked after by the beautiful Rita, this place has a great and friendly staff and it is quite a cozy place. There are a number of common areas great for making friends and there are motor bikes for hire. It's possibly the only place for this in Dili.
The Location
The location is decent enough. Dili itself is a little spread out, so it is hard to pinpoint an exact center of town. If it has one though then this place is reasonably close to it. There is a decent restaurant across the street, a bar just down the street, and for self catering there is a gas station/ATM with basic food down the street as well.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are great, especially considering the price in comparison to other hotels. Other places around the country of triple or quadruple the cost and often have shoddier rooms. These are definitely clean and well looked after. The dormitories have fans and air con and to top it off a mini fridge. The few other rooms have air con and fan. There is also a kitchen for those who wish to self cater. Laundry is next door in the Indian restaurant and there is a great little common shower and toilet area.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are absolutely fantastic. There is a nice little patio area in the backyard which comes with a bar where the staff are constantly watching soap operas, and inside there is an area of couches with a large screen television with a massive DVD/VHS movie collection. Also just out front attached to the place (where you can do laundry) is an Indian restaurant serving decently priced meals.
Summary
This is definitely the best place we stayed in East Timor -- the best time and the most character can be found here. Also the price hasn't risen so much in comparison to other hotels to accommodate the influx of Australian troops and United Nations officials clogging the streets, as they generally tend to avoid this place. This is a definite benefit from the backpacker perspective.
