The Hostelz.com Review
The Old Breadshop is a former bakery built in the early 1900s. It is full of olden day charm with a log fireplace still remaining from its years as a bread house and much of the furniture and carpet from the sixties. The hostel fits in perfect with the town, which has quite a few shops dating back to the 1800s. The hostel is very small and homey and has a real yesteryear feel to the building.
The Location
The hostel is located in the centre of town and is close to the bus stop, visitors information centre, and local pubs and shops. There is lots of parking available and the owners live in the house next door. Reefton is an old mining town that had its own supply of electricity and gas in 1888, before anywhere else in New Zealand. The pubs offer excellent home cooked roasts every night of the week. Reefton is a very small town and has numerous great walks around it but no ATM although the supermarket does offer EPOS.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has a total of four rooms. The dorm rooms are small -- one sleeps five, one sleeps four, and the other sleeps three people. Only the five-share is bunk beds. The hostel also has one double room. The rooms are brightly decorated and have draws, lamps, tables, and mirrors. They have locks on the bedroom doors but no lockers are available. Linen, bedding, and towels are supplied. There are two toilets but only one shower, which has adequate changing space.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a large common area for watching TV with sofas, a free DVD library, a book exchange area, and board games to use. In the corner there is a computer with free internet. There is a communal dining room, which has various leaflets and files on the local activities as well as pictures showing the history of the bread shop.
The kitchen is small but has adequate facilities including a microwave, oven, and hobs. There is a picnic bench just outside the hostel. The hostel also offers free use of washing machines. The hostel has a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere and is perfect for those searching for a quiet night. Many walkers stop here for the night so get to meet a whole range of people.
Summary
The hostel is a very homey, old fashioned place -- much like your granny's house. The owners, Christina and Trevor, do all they can to make you feel welcome and are there to offer any info you may need. The scenery that surrounds the hostel is lovely and the calmness can be felt throughout the rooms. The hostel is spotlessly clean and really is a lovely place to stay.
