The Hostelz.com Review
Luna's Castle Hostel, in our opinion, is one of the best we've stayed at.

The Location

Luna's Castle is located in the Casco Viejo area of Panama City, which is a popular tourist area. The city centre (new city) is a forty-five-minute walk along the promenade. A couple of blocks away is Avenida Colon, a pedestrianised street with plenty of shops, markets, and restaurant establishments. There are convenient public transport links nearby.

On arrival you will be provided with a map which highlights local attractions and services required by backpackers. There are folders with more information on tours, attractions, and restaurants. If you are traveling on to other destinations in Central America or catching a sailboat to Colombia, there is lots of information available. The hostel is secure and the door is always locked and opened by a member of the reception, which is staffed twenty-four hours a day. Staff speak Spanish and English but largely English to non-perfect-speaking Spanish foreigners, which is the only downside to this hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are spacious (the dorms range in size) and the hostel provides clean bed linen. There are approximately sixty beds in total. Bathrooms are shared. The rooms have security lockers for valuables but you need your own lock.

Common Spaces

The reception area doubles up as a common room with a large table, ping pong table, and book exchange. There are more security lockers that can be used if you have your own lock. Situated next to the main common area is a well-stocked kitchen with refrigerators and cooking utensils. A free pancake and banana breakfast is available each day until midday. There is always cooled drinking water available in the common area free of charge. During happy hour there are half-price beers. The adjacent Relic bar is accessible from the hostel but also open to nonresidents.

There is a huge movie room with tiered mattresses and cushions, which is great for a quiet night in watching DVDs. Another common room has comfortable couches and hammocks with a fantastic view if the Panama City skyline. There are five computers available with internet access. There is Wi-Fi internet available for free if you bring your own laptop. There is also a quick, good value laundry service available.

Summary

This hostel is recommended! It also has two sister hostels in Bocas del Toro (Mondo Heike and Mondo Taitu) so many travelers go to both hostels. Bookings are recommended in advance, especially during busy periods.

2  Go somewhere else Do not go to this hostel!! I was there a month ago and had an awful experience. Not only was the hostel uncharming and filthy, but the staff was extremely rude and unhelpful. It was however better than sleeping in the gutter -- Barely.  , UK ()
5  The way all hostels should be What more to say? Great staff, great building, great neighborhood, and cheap!  , USA ()
