Hostelz.com's Review
Uenuku Lodge is a substantial, wooden-construction house neatly painted in grey with eight parking spaces on a large concrete driveway at the front.

The Location

Well-located for access to the city, this hostel is situated approximately half way along the popular and vibrant Ponsonby Road at the corner of Pember Reeves Street. A bus stop for several routes including the Inner Link is immediately outside. The area sparkles with clubs, bars, and restaurants, some offering live music. The heart of downtown Auckland is only a twenty-minute walk away and a large New World supermarket is a fifteen-minute walk away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The co-ed dorm rooms on the ground floor vary in size up to ten bunk spaces, but still feel quite spacious, light, and airy; each has its own en suite bathroom. One room boasts an en suite kitchen area and a book exchange corner, which does mean some general hostel traffic enters the room, but this doesn’t seem to constitute a problem. Lockers (bring your own padlock) are provided in the room. Smaller, four-bed, and double rooms on the first floor are well served by toilets and bathrooms; some have basins in the room. Bedding is clean and soft, and mattresses are very comfortable. Medium-weight duvets ensure a warm night’s sleep.

Bathroom facilities are kept clean by a dedicated young staff, mostly travelers themselves stopped for a while. Showers are powerful and hot, and a nice touch is a table of free toiletries discarded by departing guests.

Common Spaces

A reception office immediately on entering the hostel houses the standard leaflet wall. The TV and internet lounge has a large coffee table and four comfortable double sofas, a flat-screen TV, and a single PC for free use. Uniquely for Auckland, this hostel provides free, unlimited Wi-Fi with perfectly reasonable download speeds and good coverage throughout the hostel.

The kitchen is reasonably well equipped and has a total of four large fridges and a freezer; even when the hostel is fully occupied, there is always space for individuals’ cold storage. Recycling of paper, cans, and glass is available. The kitchen opens onto a covered patio with large wooden tables and benches, which is the only space for dining, and doubles as the smoking area. Regrettably, smoking and dining therefore take place in the same space. Beyond the covered area the patio stretches to the garden wall with plenty of space for bicycle storage and even a small working fountain. Washing machines (charged) and plenty of washing lines for drying are available.

Slightly scruffy around the edges, and with a well-worn appearance, Uenuku is a very friendly and welcoming hostel, run by charming, young, well-motivated staff under the tutelage of a gracious female Indian owner. Inevitably for Auckland, there is a high degree of churn as backpackers land, regroup, and seek out vans or flats before moving on. Nevertheless, the hostel retains a sense of fun and a laid-back atmosphere with scope for conversation and social intercourse late into the evening in the rear patio yard.
