Hostelz.com's Review
Riding Fool Hostel is a great hostel to explore the Comox Valley with optional tours and pick up to visit Mt. Washington for skiing and mountain biking. There are also summer and winter package deals, including tickets to Mt. Washington.

The Location

The hostel is located in small-town Cumberland, which is in Comox Valley, just a few kilometers out of the larger town of Courtney. It is a great location to base yourself during summer or winter, as there are many outdoor activities going on all year round. There is a grocery store just minutes away from the hostel. It is a little harder to get to without transport, as you would need to catch a public bus from Courtney if you arrive by train or Greyhound -- otherwise, it is easy to find if you have your own transport.

Rooms and Bathrooms

You have the option of staying in dorm rooms or privates at Riding Fool. Dorm rooms range from a very large, spacious twelve-bed dorm to a smaller, six-bed dorm. The beds are comfy, although the upper bunks are really high and don’t have any safety rails. Dorm rooms also have quite large lockers, individual reading lamps, and you can hire towels. There are also private double rooms if you want more privacy. There are four bathrooms each with its own toilet and shower; as the hostel is quite small, you usually don’t have to wait.

Common Spaces

The common space at Riding Fool is huge and gives you plenty of options to entertain yourself, including a pool table and board games, and socialize with others. Although there is no TV, you do have access to free Wi-Fi throughout the hostel. The kitchen is also very well equipped, with two ovens, a large fridge, and microwave. It is a fairly social hostel, although when we stayed here, it was pretty quiet in the middle of April; we imagine that during high season, it would be a very fun hostel. There is also a quiet sitting area if you want to stay away from the common room, which has a cute and comfy rocking chair and couches.

Summary

This hostel has one of the best common rooms we've seen and is super clean, making it the perfect place to stay to explore Comex Valley or just to stop off on the way to Western and Northern Vancouver Island.

5   No problems here! The place was quite large, mind you when we were there it was empty. Nonetheless, it had friendly staff and a lot of space. Would stay here again if I was in the area.  , Canada ()
5  The best option by far for Mount Washington overnighters on a budget. The staff will even arrange for the ski bus to pick you up in the morning en route and take you home at night. The common room could use a bit of work to make it cozier, but I stayed there in the first year it was open. It might have improved since then. Lots of woodsy exposed beams and hardwood floors.  ()
5  The hosts are cool, the hostel is gorgeous (all renovated with beautiful wood floors and bright paint), and Cumberland is a lovely little town. I highly recommend staying here!  ()
5  This hostel was great! I stayed for two nights with friends and had a good time. The beds and linens were clean. The atmosphere was laid-back and everyone was really nice. It's a great place for ski/snowboarders, and only a short drive to Mount Washington. This place is great — check it out!  ()
4  This was definitely a fun place to be for a night or two. Cumberland has lots to offer in the sporting way, and it's easy to hook up with people to get to the lake, the mountain, parks or trails. The hostel was squeakingly brand new, but surprisingly comfortable and laid-back. The floors are all wood and there's a good ambience going on. It's also right on the main drag, so wherever you want to go in such a small town, it's right there for you. The Waverley Hotel a few doors away has a good jam night most weeks, the coffee shop downstairs will make every kind of caffeine you need in the morning, and the bike shop is next door once you get buzzed for the day.  ()
5  It was a clean and frindly hostel. I would highly recommend this place to my friends and families.  ()
