The Hostelz.com Review
The Hikers Hostel is located in the old town of Veliko Turnovo. We thought the atmosphere of staying in a neighborhood was great. The children play in the narrow cobblestone streets and the local residents recognize you after you've passed the streets a couple of times.
The hostel was very clean, and the rooms were well kept. The bathrooms are newly tiled and very clean, though there is the typical absence of a shower curtain (we can't figure out why this piece of technology hasn't made it to Bulgaria). The kitchen doesn't have a stove or oven, but there is a microwave. The breakfast is nothing to write home about, but you can help yourself to it whenever you wake up. And the coffee is brewed, not instant. There is also satellite tv.
We did stay there during low season, so we often had the seven person dorm room to ourselves. There is great customer service, with a free pickup at the train or bus station if you phone ahead.

Friendly staff It's far away from the train station but it's a good location for all hikers. Breakfast is very good when you are traveling in Bulgaria. — Anonymous (2010-02-23)

I absolutely loved it -- ended up staying about two weeks (summer '06). Stayed in the 'noisy dorm' by the kitchen as sleep soundly but other rooms quieter. Staff are all wonderful in so many different ways. Breakfast was fine and location of hostel good (small cobbled hill though). Town itself is great with beautiful surroundings, hikes, and decent nightlife if you ask the locals. Could get too noisy for some but I, and others i met, rate it amongst the best hostels anywhere. Freshly picked grapes from overhead vines and mastika from the freezer -- priceless. — Torben S (2006-12-10)
The hostel has lovely views over to the fortress (but in winter it is very foggy so not much to be seen) and the staff are friendly. However, the hostel is not
good for winter because you must go outside to connect between the common room or kitchen and the dorms or the dorms and the toilet/shower. The rooms themselves are well heated though. The common room is for smokers and there is no ventilation so it's very smoky and smelly and extremely unpleasant for non-smokers, meaning you are confined to your dorm and makes it difficult to enjoy using the facilities. It's also very much a party hostel so is noisy and very difficult to sleep if that's what you want to do at night! There is one dorm room connected to the common room which suffers particularly badly. The showers are not terribly clean and are shared with the toilet so you can be in trouble if someone is showering! The kitchen isn't well equipped so only basic cooking is possible, and the breakfast is very simple and not really a selling point. — Sam (2006-12-01)

Awesome hostel. The facilities are fantastic, the staff become good friends, and the views are to die for. It's in a very convenient location for seeing the sights and there are good restaurants very close by. I can't recommend it highly enough. — Dave (2005-05-26)

I liked it very much here. It's more like you're staying in a friend's house than staying in a hostel. The woman who runs the place is really nice and helpful. They also get you from the bus or train station. Breakfast is extraordinarily good and a lot for the price, and everything's clean and nice. No better hostel in Veliko Tarnovo!!! — Nikki (2005-04-16)

Hard to rate this hostel, because it's not finished yet. But it's in a great location--5 minutes from all the action. The view of the fortress from the balcony has to be one of the best in the town, and Ralitsa and Todor are super-nice hosts. When all the facilities are finally completed, this place is going to be amazing. As of now, it merely the best place to sleep in Veliko Tarnovo. Stay here. — TG (2004-07-25)
