The Hostelz.com Review
Nagasaki International Hostel AKARI is a fine hostel, run by a very friendly English-speaking couple in a great location.

The Location

It is very easy to find, only a couple stops on the tram from the train station and a few blocks walk from the tram stop. Their directions led us right to it. It is right next to the river, facing a temple on the opposite side.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The eight-bed dorms are reasonably sized, with Japanese mats on the floor and A/C unit in each dorm. The shared shower facilities are fine -- the hot shower time is between 8 a.m. and noon and 6 p.m. to midnight, though they have a sign up saying if you need to shower in between noon and 6 p.m., they will turn on the hot water. It wasn't an issue for us. There are small security lockers downstairs by reception, not big enough for a backpack but plenty of room for valuables. The rooms all have locks on the doors.

Common Spaces

The common area is nice, with a large flat screen TV and DVD player (including a small selections of DVDs). They have free wireless internet and three computers available in the common room. They say the Wi-Fi works in some rooms -- it didn't for us but we were on the fourth floor. They have a decent sized, if basic, kitchen for anyone to use. They were working on a travel library when I was there. There is no smoking anywhere in the hostel.

Summary

Check-in time is from 3 to 8 p.m., but we arrived at 11:30 a.m. and they let us check in and showed us to our room right away. Also if you arrive later than 8 they put a notice for you on the door and all you have to do is call the hostel -- it's very reasonable. Check-out time is 11:00. There is a keypad lock on one door and the code is written on your key, so you can get back in any time after they close up at 8 p.m. There is no elevator, so expect to be walking up a few flights of stairs. All in all this a fine place to stay -- clean, quiet, well run, and in a good location!
