If you're looking for a taste of Spain away from Anglo-tourists, check this place out. Aguilar de Campoó, the town in which this hostel is located, is a great place. There are old architecture, a ruined castle, and a lake beach 3.5 km from town. Plus, there's a galleta (cookie) factory so the air smells like sweet baking.
You can get to the hostel by bus or train. Bus is better since the train station stop for Aguilar is actually 2.5 km from the town. Be warned that at this time (summer 2005) they're building a bus station and until it's done you'll have to phone or go online to get bus departure times out of Aguilar. So plan ahead or go through a little extra trouble. When coming into town by bus keep your eyes open; the hostel direction is signposted.
You can reserve a room at the Albergue Nido de las Aguilas (Eagles' Nest Hostel) by email, but you can't pay online. The hostel is clean and comfortable. Groups (like school trips or activity weekends) of Spaniards seem to frequent this place, but they're friendly. You may get a family or two as well. The hostel is run by a man and his daughter. The former speaks English pretty well, but it would be good if you're coming to the area to know a bit of Spanish.
Lockout is from 1pm-5:30pm, so if you want to take a siesta this can put a crimp in your plans. But if you grab what you need beforehand you can spend the time out and about (how about walking to the beach and chilling there).
Prices for the rooms are very reasonable. Meals and sheets/blankets cost extra. Breakfast (not included in the price of the cheapest room) isn't really worth it. It consists of bread, coffee/hot chocolate, and cookies. Dinner is pretty good, though. It'll be something like spaghetti, chicken, french fries, and a desert. Dinner is served around 9 p.m. and the portions are large. Still, picking up a slice of pizza or something at the supermarket would be cheaper. Lunch is an option at the hostel as well.
Don't get your laundry done here! The price is about 10 euros and there is a lavandería (laundrymat) in town. If you do let them do your laundry, you might get a taste of the Spanish laid-back mindset in regard to time (they do it with the family laundry)--it could be one day. Town is not too big, so the hostel location is good. The owner is helpful and may take some time to give you a couple pointers on your Spanish, though he can get a little busy at times.
There's no self-catering kitchen and no public internet or phones. Walk into town for these. The bathrooms are clean and the showers hot. Mountain bikes are for hire and group activities (hikes, rafting trips) can be booked. The hostel has a large dining room with a TV that's only sometimes on (Spanish). There are lockers in the rooms, but no keys to lock them with. But security doesn't seem to be a problem.
The hostel is a comfortable place with just a touch of hominess because of the wood floors, its owners, and the visiting Spanish family or two, but it can have the feel of a camp bunkhouse when you go down to eat dinner with 20-odd kids. All in all, Aguilar de Campoó is a great place to stay, and the hostel here is a good one.
