Description
Come join us under the volcanoes where you can learn to dive, swim in a volcanic lake, study Spanish, hike to waterfalls, volcanic peaks and neighboring Mayan villages, or simply lie in a hammock and enjoy doing nothing at all.

After years without electricity, we finally succumbed and now offer cold beers, hot showers and internet service. Electricity is limited so kerosene lamps provide light in the evenings as our family-style dinners often lead to hours of travel tales, story telling, board games, very bad jokes, guitars & sing-along.

We were primarily a backpacker hostel but our rooms now range from simple to downright luxurious. There's space for around fifty people the last time someone found the energy to count, and our newest rooms are suitable even for those above 30! We've got three dormitories with 22 beds in total, several single/double rooms and even some triples for the kinky among you. Seven shared bath facilities are on the grounds so you won't have to wait in line, and yes, the showers are HOT!

From 8AM - 3PM daily we offer breakfasts & lunches aimed to satisfy the hungry backpacker. Egg dishes, crepes, fruit, salad, sandwiches and the like are prepared lovingly by our staff of indigenous women and cost around $2.50 a meal.
Dinner is served at 7:00 and the fixed menu is a delicious 3-course feast consisting of soup with homemade bread, a hot main course (vegetarian option always available), and coffee, tea & cake for dessert - all for Q45 (US$5.50).

Saturday night barbecue parties at the Iguana are somewhat legendary on the backpacker trail. We serve chicken or veggie burgers and a huge buffet of side dishes and salads, followed by our famous chocolate brownies. Guitars & drums emerge and after a few flavored vodka shots you're guaranteed to hear the chicken bus song. Our bar is open every day and night for sodas, beer, wine, spirits and bottled

Amazing views, delicious food, clean rooms, great diving, and world-class laziness are all here waiting for you!

2 the placement   — Customer review (2012-01-08) Hostelbookers
5 The hostel is in a really beautiful, tranquil place at the edge of the lake in a tiny village (right near the pier). Sunsets are beautiful from the chairs and hammocks out front. Communal dinners really bring all the guests together and can be loads of fun. Communal bathrooms were spotless and had a touch of eco-resort about them. We also dived with the hostel's dive centre (ATI Divers) - very professionally run. Andy is a great instructor.   — Customer review (2011-08-30) Hostelbookers
5 deedle and dave are fabulous...as are the staff members. sarah, marco, owen, and crew...you're aces in my book. dorm was very clean, shower was suspect, but functional. one lancha (boat) stop from pana, so you have access to hop over to shop, bbq under a palapa, or my personal recommendation, paraglide with Christian, Mike, or another available world-class professional at the shop (ask the staff for christian's number). it provides a breathtaking view of the volcanoes and it's the closest thing we have to flying like an eagle. you won't regret it. a great hike of 40 minutes, one of 3 hours, one to a waterfall and one to solola' begins from the iguana. you must take a kayak out in the morning when it's calm...awesome. you can also easily take a lancha to any of the pueblos along the north and west coast. stay at least a few days to get the full experience. excellent food. safest place on the lake.   — Customer review (2011-04-06) Hostelbookers
5 Fantastic food: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try and get there for a Saturday as their barbecue night is a lot of fun. Very helpful staff and nice rooms.   — David Collis (2010-10-25) Hostelbookers

4 Great place to meet people and its in the perfect location on the lake. Its close to busy Panahachel and the tranquil San Marcos. Cool and friendly staff and nightly/daily events. I could spend a while here :)   — Customer review (2009-01-21) Hostelbookers

5 They had amazing hostel dinners where you could get to know other guests. I loved the staff, the yoga, the view, the people. I would rate it 5stars   — Jocelyn Corbett (2008-07-19) Hostelbookers
5 What's not to like? Room 1 is fantastic! And where else in Santa Cruz are you expected to dress in drag on a Saturday night? The only problem I had was that I spent too much money. Obviously my fault, not theirs. Watch your bar tab when you're partying. The Gallo does flow...   — Jonathan Middleton (2008-06-17) Hostelbookers
5 Great location right on the lake. Make sure you try out the traditional Mayan sauna. At only $3.50 for a dorm bed this is excellent value!   — Jane Holland (2008-04-15) Hostelbookers
5 Family buffet dinner was really cool   — Scott Impola (2008-03-30) Hostelbookers
4 Being trapped in Santa Cruz by 7pm because of the boat rides seemed like a trap, but :a Iguana Perdida did an awesome job of keeping the nights filled with good dinners, great people to mingle with, and good social events in the evenings. Do NOT miss the cross-dressing parties on Saturday nights! I felt like I was at summer camp...except I drank a lot more. Overall, I highly recommend this as your base to explore the cities around the lake.   — Jonathan Thomas (2008-03-25) Hostelbookers

5  Great atmosphere, beautiful views, friendly staff. I went to the Iguana for a day or two and ended up staying for weeks. The views of the lake are stunning and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Great place to meet other people too if you are traveling on your own as I was. Highly recommend it!  , Australian ()
