The Hostelz.com Review
Base Townsville is located in the transit centre and is therefore very handy for connecting with the coach services. This hostel has a very different layout from the Base on Magnetic Island, but has the same relaxed, chilled-out atmosphere. There is a large TV room offering a offering all the cable channels on a huge widescreen TV and very comfortable seating. In the same room there is also high-speed internet access.
Near the common area is the kitchen which is quite small but is very clean and well-equipped. There is also a large dining area with a spa and pool table in the same room. The bathrooms are large and very clean with free shampoo and body wash provided in the shower cubicles. The dorm rooms are spacious and clean with most rooms having air conditioning as well as proper thick and comfy mattresses. Under the bunk beds, there are also lockers that are big enough to store a large backpack.
The main drawback of the hostel though is not that it's a ten-minute walk into the town centre, but rather that if you need to contact the reception for any reason -- like getting change for the pool table, inquiring about tours or purchasing internet cards -- you have to walk back downstairs, through the security doors and coach terminal until you reach the reception in the main transit centre.
Overall though, an all around nice hostel -- particularly if you're catching some of the early morning coach services.

Only had a short stay here but found the hostel comfortable and with good facilities, it is not near the greyhound bus terminal though as i thought and a walk from the museums

Roof terrace was great. Toilets were in bad shape.

Honestly, there was not much to like about this place. It has absolutely no atmosphere and if you want to get some decent sleep: avoid this place, it's noisy as hell.

Zac is incredibly friendly and approachable and on this fact alone can I recommend Transit Centre Backpackers in Townsville. It was clean and my room was spacious. The curtain in room 5 is not long enough to cover the windows completely and let the night light in. I've had worse! I indicate below that, Yes, HostelBookers was promoted at the hostel. This I do not know as I never look at such advertising. Sorry.

DON'T STAY HERE!!! I booked two nights so i had to stay otherwise i would of checked out the next day. The showers are falling to bits with no taps and missing toilet seats and light switches not attched properley plus there was a funny smell. . The whole place needs a full refurb or knocking down!

I enjoyed my stay there very much, i was only there for 2 nights but the people already there were welcoming and we had a great laugh. Even the boss was in with us having a few drinks socialising with us etc. I enjoyed it and on my way back there i would stay there again.

The manager was on site all the time and he was very happy and friendly. The backpackers staying there were all really nice and it was easy to make friends. It was just the cleanliness of the shared bathrooms. The hostel looked nothing like the brochures. it probably did in 2000.

I liked the staff and the chilled atmosphere. It was also great, that it was not to crowded.

Party central I had the best time here, Met so many kool people -- everyone is really friendly if you make an effort. My single room was cheap and massive, and clean. The other areas are a bit average but its what you make of it. You can expect too much, it is a hostel after all. — Nat , Adelaide (2008-10-12)

Fantastic value all round, great party atmosphere, and some great friendships were made by all the staff at that time. i remember the party nights we organised in the adjoining bar (andys) recovery the next morning involved running up castle hill before work. michael millios my boss used to shake his head in disbelief. but dont listen to me or anyone else sample the experience for yourself. — stuart myers (2006-01-31)

It's okay for one night, but don't expect much. — Kat (2005-09-17)
This place has the most unfriendly people on the reception I've ever met in Australia. The hostel is clean, but very big. It's not so easy to meet people. — Anonymous (2005-07-15)

I stayed here on several occassions - primarily for the convenience: close to buses and city transfers. I generally enjoyed my stay - although would only recommend it for short periods. The kitchen is rather small and needs cleaning and repairs. The dorm rooms are either too hot or too cold and beds are not particulary comfy. But the location is perfect - for Townsville anyway. Close to pubs, eateries, transfers and the crew at reception are great, really helpful and friendly! — Kate (2005-06-21)
The air-conditioning was VERY cold and since I didn't want to pay extra for a blanket I froze in my sarong. This place was a bit of a dump, and not that clean (but not dirty). It has zero charm, a dull vibe, an industrial feel, and iffy showers. But no one stays in Townsville for very long anyway, and the location (above the bus station) was so handy! That alone was the reason I chose to stay here. It's not good but it's not bad, so if you are just in for a night it is worth a stay. — B. Monroe (2005-02-06)

The hostel was the best part of my stay in Townsville, which was nothing too exciting. The rooms were massive and had air-conditioning...awww!! The staff were great and the location was perfect for Oz Experience bus pass holders, because the bus picks you up right there. The kitchen could have been cleaner, but that's my only complaint. — Miriam (2005-01-27)

This place was all right to stay in overnight, but I wouldn't want to spend too much time here. — Anonymous (2004-12-15)
This place is all right if you're only here a night or two, on either side of going to Maggie Island, for example. But I got bitten to death by bedbugs, with no apology whatsoever from the staff, who refused to accept responsibility or act on it. — Anonymous (2004-10-13)

It's quite cheap, has a fun bar, is centrally located, and has professional staff. The only problem: my double room had no toilet and awful common showers. — Max (2004-08-29)
I found this place to be a hole. I don't know when it was renovated, but I was there in May 2004, and it looked like it was built in the 70's and not had any attention since. Thankfully, I didn't hang around here too long. — Anonymous (2004-08-15)

This is really quite a smart place! — Anonymous (2004-06-10)

Best time of my life. I worked with the wonderful Millios family who established Transit Centre. Great location and a reception and café area that gave the place a "hotel atmosphere". A good value for the money. — Ricki Knee Karlsson (2004-03-15)
