Holualoa Hostel Reviews

Description

Just minutes up the slopes of Hualalai Volcano (dormant) from Kona Bay on Old Mamalahoa Hwy, this ‘40s vintage wood frame “jewel box in a bird-park” is surrounded by a Coffee & Green Tea orchard, Mac-nut trees, Banana, Tangerines, tropical Grapefruit, lilies, bromeliads, heliconia, anthurium and ginger. Beautifully lit, nice & warm, well ventilated with a fireplace for those chilly and/or rainy nights at this 1,560’ elevation. Hardwood floors, hand-knotted and sculpted carpets, rough sawn cedar bevelboard walls, open-beam vaulted ceilings, ocean-horizon views. Guest Bath w/ shower (outdoor claw-foot tub, shower, pull-chain toilet in progress, along with pond re-build). Rainwater catchment Koi Pond adjacent sun-struck rear lanai w/ BBQ and open-air Chiminea for your marshmallow roast. Front porch park bench faces a teak bench under a canvas umbrella sheltered by Bingabing trees across a grassblok courtyard. Huge Banyan, Mango & Avocado nearby give the feel of an arboretum. Short stroll to fabulous shoreline views? Walk in the country? Join our pups in the orchard? Sure, just steps away!

At it’s closest proximity to Kailua-Kona, Old Mamalahoa Hwy skirts the Island at an ideal elevation for a “good night’s sleep”. We are three miles north of the art colony at Holualoa, along a Historic Corridor dating back to the origins of life in West Hawai’I. It’s just 2 mi. further N. to Palani Junction. Turn left to Kona Bay just 3mi. further on with Hulihe’e Palace (historic winter residence of Hawaiian Royalty), and Mokuaikaua Church ( 1st Christian Church in Hawai’i just full of gorgeous Koa wood within a lava rock and coral mortar exterior). A right turn at Palani Junction takes you to Hina Lani Drive en route to our beaches, or 40 mi. to Waimea, or 75 mi. E. to Hilo, or 90 mi. SE. to Kilauea Volcano and beyond.

Location and Contact

Location

• From Kona International Airport turn Right onto Queen Ka’ahumanu Hwy (Rte 19) past the first signal. After about 3 miles, turn Left at the second signal, Hina Lani Drive as you approach Kailua Kona. Go to the top, turn Right onto Hawai’i Belt Road - Hwy. 190. Go about ¼ mi. South passing a sign stating Holualoa > 5 mi. This is Palani Junction, so turn Left. From Kailua Village itself, from Queen Ka’ahumanu Hwy follow Palani Road uphill for about 3 mi. in a NE direction passing another sign (Holualoa > 5 mi.). In both cases, you’ll now be on “Old Mamalahoa Hwy” (Rte 180) and there will be a green “9 mi.” sign about 0.1 mi. along the way on the “mauka” (up the mountain) side on the left. Take note on your odometer if you like, and 2 mi. further to the South you’ll see a green “7 mi.” marker. 100 yds/mtrs further S., there’s a 4 x 4 white post with caution yellow “Irish Setter Crossing” & “Golden Retriever Crossing” signs at the top marking the entry to our driveway. About 10 yds/mtrs further along there is a “Kona Coffee Traders” sign and you can park along the “makai” (toward the ocean) side of the highway, on either side of the sign. Take the path from the sign to our front doors. From Holualoa Village, and it’s great Art Colony, start at the Post Office and travel North for about 3 mi., passing the two-story forest green “Komo Country Store” about ¼ mi. before you come to the “Kona Coffee Traders” sign noted above. Park on the “Makai” side of the road, find and follow the path by the sign to our front doors. If it’s raining, pull into the driveway, then turn an immediate left into the grassblok courtyard where you’ll find an umbrella waiting.
