Location and Contact

Location

• Directions in Costa Rica are usually given using points of reference, so even our official address of 25th street, 1st and 3rd avenue 156, might be meaningless to even the most seasoned taxi driver. In Tico speak we are located 50 meters west and 150 meters north of the Pizza Hut in La California. Another useful reference is 50 meters north of Cine Magaly's parking.
• To get here from the Juan Santamaria Airport you have several choices. The easiest and most expensive is taking a taxi directly from the airport. The airport taxis are orange, nicer than regular taxis and have bilingual drivers. You can even reserve one online (http://www.taxiaeropuerto.com/ing_index.shtml). This service will cost you around $30 and take about 45 minutes.
• You can also take the regular San Jose-Alajuela bus service leaving about every 10 minutes from the street in front of the airport, past the parking lot. This is a regular bus used mostly by Costa Ricans and will cost you less than $1 (payable in colones when you board the bus). It will leave you at the TUASA Terminal in San Jose, north of Parque de la Merced. From here you can get a taxi that will take the 2.5km to the hostel and should charge you about $5, which is about ₡2500 (the taxi might take dollars if asked nicely). All taxis should use their meter, or 'Maria' as it's called here, so don't hesitate to tell them to run it if it seems they're not.
• If you're already in Costa Rica but nowhere near San Jose, your most affordable option is to take a public bus into SJ and then a taxi to the hostel. Bus service from even the most remote locations is usually less than $10 or ₡5000 and the taxi from within San Jose city to the hostel should be around $5. Public bus rides from far off locales are definitely not the fastest but they are cheap. You can also ride in tourist shuttles which offer better service but much higher prices (around $50 instead of $10). You should be able to set a pick up from one of these shuttles with your hotel.
• If you decide to rent a car, you will find several options within the airport. It's probably a good idea to get a GPS in your car, as our roads are not as well signaled or as clear as in Europe or the United States or even Mexxco.
