Coconut Hostel is in Bocas del Toro on the main Island, Isla Colon. It is probably the cheapest hostel in town and gathers many backpackers traveling on a low budget.
The Location
it is located in the main town of Isla Colon, right next to a supermarket and in front of the park where the bus station is. To get to the hostel, people need to reach Islan Colon either on a flight or on a boat, and from the airport and the dock it is a ten-minute walk. Many other hostels are located around there and the clubs at night are also within a ten-minute walking distance.
Rooms and Bathrooms
It offers hammocks, tents, dorms, and private rooms. The rooms are very basic; mattresses are old and a bit dirty, and bunks make some noise when people move. Rooms are also quite small and there is not much space to leave the backpacks. Lockers are available but you need to use your own padlock. Bathrooms are one per floor and toilets and showers are separated. Soap is available to use. While rooms don’t always seem clean, bathrooms are because the cleaning lady seems to take care of them often.
Common Spaces
There are not many common spaces. A little garden in the entrance with a few tables and chairs and an open kitchen in front of the reception that guests can use free of charge. There is also a small balcony on the first floor. Free breakfast is provided, but it only involves one small pancake and half a banana, so it is not that good. The kitchen is always dirty and the cooking equipment is very old. Drinkable water is provided at a cheap price. The vibe is not a party one. It has a Rastafarian vibe where people smoke and play guitar in the evening singing together, and this hostel is very smoky and seems to gather people that like to smoke a lot. It is possible to meet other travelers but guests need to understand that it is a very hippie place. There are sometimes creepy and high people, especially in the evening, so you need to always watch your belongings.
Summary
All in all, this is a very cheap place compared to the area and it provides a lower-quality service. Rooms are very basic, as are the facilities. For those not into smoking much, this should not be a good spot. On a similar line, if you don't really enjoy the hippie vibe, this place is not a good choice.
