The Hostelz.com Review
This hostel is a bright, spacious, and fun place. The large building, many common areas, bright colors, and clean rooms attract a large number of travellers and encourage them to be social. It also offers a close bus stop and a helpful (though seldom available due to understaffing) staff to help travelers explore and get the most out of their visit to Torino, Italy.

The Location

Located in a quiet neighborhood, about five bus stops from the train station, Ostello Torino is a great place for either resting or catching a bus to see the sights of Turin. The hostel itself can be rather difficult to locate. The street is so small that it isn't on most maps and even some of the locals aren't sure where to direct a questioning traveler. The best thing to do is talk to information at the train station, hop on the appropriate bus (which bus is appropriate depends on holiday, weekend, weekday, etc. which is why asking at information is so important), and then walk the few blocks from the nearby station to via Alby.

To see most of the sights of Turin travelers will need to either catch a bus back to town or resolve themselves for quite a walk. To the bridge, about halfway to the train station, is a twenty-minute walk at best.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Each occupant is given a separate room key to access their room. The showers also have working locks and the hostel desk faces the doors to discourage any non-occupants from wandering the halls.

The rooms themselves are brightly colored, spacious, and clean. They all have lockers. The bathrooms are, likewise, in great condition. And the whole hostel has a cheery and well-kept feeling.

Common Spaces

The hostel is well set up for the social traveler. There is a large dining area on the main floor and dinner is offered every night for an additional fee. There are also vending machines, tall circular tables, and two computers (internet also costs extra) in the front-desk area. On the second floor there are two long tables, a balcony with additional seating and a view of some Italian homes through the trees of the hostel yard. This setup encourages hostellers to enjoy the spaces outside their rooms and make friends in the process.

Summary

The only complaint that can be lodged against this hostel is that there isn't a large enough staff to accommodate the many hostellers who pass through. One front desk staffperson cannot handle the magnitude of needs, particularly when registration opens at 3:00. We stood in line for the front desk for over an hour just to sign in and drop our things in the room. If time is of the essence, our suggestion is to sign in later, once the crowd has thinned, and sign out early, before anyone gets up.

Aside from shortstaffing the hostel is fun, bright, safe, and in a nice location. We absolutely recommend it to both the solo-traveler and backpacking groups.

yeah it's nothing special and skip breakfast. plus it's true, it does seem to be full of prepubescent Italians so it's hard to get a spot at the mirror. but the staff were fine, it was clean, there is late access and the blokes' lavs (second floor) have a magnificent view to the mountains which you can oggle at whilst you gurn. It feels closer to town than the map suggests so dont be put off, lovely green walk down a tiny hill. beware though if you are keen on the automobile museum, it has just closed for refurbishment when i went (May '07).

It's a very comfortable youth hostel and located in a privileged place in a hill of Torino very near to the urban center. Calm and cosy place, pity of the breakfast that is poor and the blankets full of crab lice. Advice -- you must take with you antiparasitic!

I stayed here on two different occasions, and I found the staff to be quite helpful and friendly both times. Breakfast was pretty plain, but free is free. The only downside is the location, not particularly hard to find, but quite the hike when you have a big backpack.

The building itself wasn't too bad, but the staff were awful. They yelled at my boyfriend and I twice for no good reason and verbally harassed a friend of mine. They also overcharged us. I left in a rage, and would never, ever go back.

This is an average hostel. On the plus side, it is clean and (relatively) quiet. The price includes linens and a light breakfast, and a good dinner (no vegetarian options) is served six days per week (not Sunday) at a cost of approximately nine euros. The staff know a lot about Torino and are friendly, and there is a small TV room that permits smoking (yuck!). Single-sex dorm rooms and bathrooms. On the downside the staff are quite disorganized and the owner in particular has a tendancy to forget to write reservations in the book. It is a traditional HI-hostel (members only) which means there is a lock-out during the late morning and afternoon each day. When I was there a large group caused major problems (assaulting female guests, drinking heavily and throwing furniture) and the staff seemed powerless to do anything (they did not call the police). I would not recommend the dorm-style rooms here but a private double or triple room would be a good deal. To reach the hostel take bus #52 and get off across the river. Pull the bell to request your stop after the bus passes the obelisk.

We had a stuff-up with our first night's booking, which had my husband and I put into separate dorms rather than the double we had booked. The second night we got our own room. The hostel is clean but not overly social.

I stayed here in 2001 and back in August 2005. The hostel is close to the center, with a 15-minute walk. Good things: — Very, very nice double room for a fair price, I think around 17 euros each. — Free Ping-Pong. — New facilities. Bad things: —Some long termers from Eastern Europe tend to live there permanently, making the atmosphere sometimes heavy for American or Western European girls. A tip, mostly for Italian visitors to Turin: the "Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento" is great and much better than the Egyptian Museum.

I don't know what the big deal is about this hostel or Turin. Its a fairly average place to stay, nice rooms and beds, 18 euros, I think it was, if you're not an HI member. For a town that really isn't that interesting it's not worth it. And if you're coming in by Ryanair, which gets in really late, you'll end up having to get a cab and you'll get ripped off. I paid 35 euros! Turin has a nice enough atmosphere but you can do it in a day easily.

This was my first hostel in Italy and wow, what a quintessential Italian city view from the balcony. All red tile roof and trees, and you feel you are in the posh part of town. It isn't hard to find the hostel: get off at the second bus stop over the river, and then a short bus ride. There are signs from there. Like most HI hostels, there is no kitchen to cook in. The staff seemed friendly. I'd definitely stay here again. The posh shops in the arcade are the nicest I found in Italy (better than Milan) and a real treat, even for the guys.

This place is clean and with a very friendly staff. Breakfast is basic but better than the breakfast at many other places. The TV room allows you to meet people, although they seemed to be mainly Italians. The restaurant at the bottom of the hill is highly recommended. Ask the bus driver to show you where to get off, although it wasn't difficult to find from the hostel. This hostel has a good central location.

This is quite a nice hostel. I stayed here in May 2004, and had a nice time. The place is a little hard to find (the information office didn't know where it was, and couldn't even find the street!), but the bus driver does seem to know where it is, which is handy! After you get off the bus, there are signs to the hostel; it's still a bit of a walk, including a monster uphill climb (tough while wearing a pack), but it is worth it. The views are very nice from the front yard, common area/balcony and dorms alike. The dorms have only a small number of beds, which is handy, and there's a sink and huge lockers for your pack, too. The bathrooms are quite good, with power showers and a washing machine, and they are very clean. The breakfast of a couple of rolls and coffee is good, if small. Despite being a little way out of the main town, this hostel has everything within walking distance, and there are a couple of nice restaurants nearby, too (just ask the friendly staff). I was only in beautiful Turin for a short stay, but I enjoyed myself a lot and I would definitely stay here again.

Clean... but the directions are definitely hard to follow (ask the bus driver to help you). Great location if you don't mind walking. Clean, but stoic and clinical. But a great deal. (Watch out, they turn off the heat at night.)
